Residents Petitioned EC To Divide Gushegu Constituency

Chiefs, Assembly Members and opinion leaders in 12 Electoral Areas from the Northern Corridor of the Gushegu Constituency in the northern region of Ghana have petitioned the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the creation of a new constituency out of the current Gushegu constituency.

The Electoral Areas included; Nabuli, Nawuhugu, Katani and Nammongbani. The rest are Nasunwia, Kolik, Damankung and Zanteli. Others included Bogu, Wawuu, Nalogu and Katanbugli.

In a statement dated August 15 2019 and signed by the Chief of Nawuhugu, Ubor Damba Salifu, and copied to the President, Vice President, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Northern Regional Minister MP for Gushegu Constituency, Municipal Chief Executive of the Gushegu District Assembly, Northern Regional Chairman of the NPP as well as the Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission of Ghana stated that the 2010 Population and Housing Census put the total population of the constituency at111,259.

He said out of this figure, 61,193 residents are located within electoral area which are difficult to access and administer.

Ubor Damba Salifu mentioned that the distance from the Municipal capital to these difficult areas is huge and this has deprived the areas of the much needed attention from the Municipal capital.

He added that the proposed areas covers the largest potion of land marks in the Municipality with 185 deprived communities and 10 electoral areas.

According to the statement, since the inception of the Assembly, the areas have not witnessed any development and provision of social amenities.

The statement further said out of the communities in the proposed areas, only 4 have been hooked to the national grid while 16 communities could only boast of very deprived basic schools. Non-availability of second cycle institutions runs throughout the proposed areas.

On economic viability, Ubor Damba Salifu stated that the proposed areas have a very big market in the Gushegu Municipality which is patronised by people from Bawku and Burkina Faso and it is capable of generating revenue to sustain the operation for the constituency if considered.

He pointed out that the proposed areas have viable economic activities in terms of Agric, farming, sheanut, Dawadawa and others that could contribute immensely to internally generated funds.

Ubor Damba Salifu further said the major farm produce in the Municipality comes from these proposed areas yet they remain the most deprived.

The statement said the Chiefs, Assembly Members and opinion leaders have unanimously decided and agreed on Nabuli-Nawuhugu as the name of the proposed constituency.

It concluded that the call for the creation of the constituency will ensure that the communities have easy access to basic social amenities such as educational and health facilities, potable drinking water and other infrastructural development such as as good road network among others.

It was hopeful that the Electoral Commission of Ghana will consider the petition and create the proposed Nabuli-Nawuhugu Constituency.
