Sarpeiman Celebrates Homowo

The Chiefs and people of Sarpeiman Traditional area in the Ga West Municipality has celebrated their annual Homowo amidst fun-fair and the sprinkling of ‘Kpokpoi’, the traditional food of the Ga’s.

Clad in red, the Chiefs and some elders took turns to sprinkle the food at the five clan houses at Sarpeiman and poured libation at sacred places and homes.

The five clan houses the Chief sprinkled the Kpokpoi included Nii Kwei We, Ayaa Nkpa We and Ayaa Fio We. The rest were Ofoli Tse Sackie We and Atwei Tse Okoe We. The Chief started the sprinkling from the from the Nii Kwei We through Sarpeiman township and ended at the cemetery.

The festival, which was celebrated peacefully, attracted a large number of natives from the Ga State and other places.

Addressing the gathering, the Sarpeiman Manste, Nii Sarpei Agbetekor III, called for a united front among the Ga’s to accelerate the development of the Greater Accra region.

He also urged the people of Sarpeiman to use the occasion to forge ahead in unity by burying their differences in order to seek the development of the town.

Nii Sarpei Agbetekor III also appealed to GaDangme Chiefs to do away with chieftaincy disputes to ensure the rapid development of their areas.

History has it that the Ga oral tradition says a severe famine broke out among the people during their migration to present day Accra.

They were inspired by the famine to embark on massive food production exercises which eventually yielded bumper harvests.

Their hunger ended and with great joy, they ‘hooted at hunger’, hence the annual celebration.

An aspiring NPP parliamentary candidate for the Amasaman Constituency, Mrs. Muriel Nana Oye Ago who graced the occasion congratulated the people of Sarpeimen for a peaceful and colourful celebrations.

She used the occasion to announced to the Chiefs and the people of the area of her intention to contest in the upcoming NPP parliamentary primaries.

She promised the Chiefs when she gets the not as Parliamentary Candidate and eventually win the national election, she will support the youth who are unemployed in the Constituency with job.
