Woman curses Police for the allegedly killing her son in Kumasi.

The mother of the young man who was allegedly beaten to death by police officers has rained curses on the officers for claiming that her son died after he jumped from their moving vehicle while on their way to the police station.

Nana Akua Bemah told otecnews’ Akwasi Owusu Achiaw in an interview which was monitored by WestAfrica 24 on Monday, 8 July 2019 that a six-year-old boy was in the car with her son at the time of the incident has confirmed that indeed, the police officers beat her son to death.

According to the child, the deceased, Kofi Opoku, a.k.a Asco, was pulled over by the police but refused to stop.

The police patrol officers at Tafo-Nhyiaeso then gave him chase. When he was caught, he was then beaten by the police until he became unconscious.

“The police asked him to stop but he refused. They chased him and beat him up. They stepped on him and they hit him with their guns and used a stick to hit his head and he fell unconscious. So, they took him to the hospital and a certain man came to pick him with a convertible car to another place,” the young boy narrated in the Twi language to journalists on Monday, 8 July 2019.

The family of the deceased, 35-year-old Kofi Opoku, on Sunday, 7 July 2019 stormed the Tafo Pankrono Divisional Police Command after the incident amidst claims that the officers pummelled him to death.

According to the family, Opoku was pulled over by the police but refused to stop. Police patrol officers at Tafo-Nhyiaeso then gave him chase.

He was then beaten by the police until he went unresponsive.

The victim was said to have been taken to the Tafo Government Hospital and was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police called for reinforcement after the youth in the area became agitated over the matter. Nine persons including the deceased’s brother were reportedly arrested.

The family insisted that the police must come clear on the matter.he deceased left behind a pregnant wife and two children.

Meanwhile, Police in the Ashanti Region say they have commenced an investigation into the death .

Police said in a statement signed by ASP Godwin Ahianyo, a Public Affairs Officer, that their preliminary investigation shows that a Police Patrol Team spotted a driver on board an unregistered Toyota Pasco private saloon car, driving recklessly making other oncoming vehicles veer off their lane.
